Organic Soap Berries (Soap Nuts) Natural Laundry Detergent 250g. 90+ washloads. That Red House certified organic Soapberries (also called Soap Nuts) are the natural alternative to traditional fabric softeners and laundry detergents. Can also be used as a concentrated all purpose liquid soap. The dried shell of the fruit of the Sapindus Mukorossi tree is exceptionally high in 'saponin' which is nature's soap.  Straight from nature to your home!

Features

You are making a difference:

  • Supporting the 'Grow Nepal' initiative which creates a future for the Nepalese people, and protecting the trees helps reduce deforestation in the Himalayas.
  • Reducing pollution by using a raw plant product with almost no processing or packaging and that is fully compostable.
  • Completely chemical free, grey water safe, septic safe.
  • No plastic bottle - calico bag can be reused and soap nuts can be composted at the end of use.

Intructions for use:

  • Place the equivalent of five whole soap berry shells in the small cotton bag provided.
  • Add bag to normal washload and remove when finished.
  • Use warmer water for heavily soiled loads (40-60 degrees).
  • Re-use the same shells for approx. four more loads.
  • If you prefer a scent on your laundry, pop a few drops of your favourite essential oil on the wash bag (such as lavender or eucalyptus).
  • When finished, shells are thin and brittle, at which point they can be added to your compost to break down naturally.
  • You can also make a multi-purpose liquid by boiling the berries for 15 minutes, and use the liquid for anything, from shampoo to a cleaner.

Features:

  • Money saving. Soap nuts cost around 10c per wash load for a 1kg bag. Compared to conventional washing powders, they can save you a great deal over the course of a year. Data supplied by That Red House.
  • 90+ washing loads!
  • Hypo-allergenic. Perfect for those with sensitive skin or allergies.
  • Anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and odorless.

Brand story

After some serious health scares, the couple behind That Red House decided it was time for a change. Selling their house in the eastern suburbs of Adelaide, they moved out to the hills, where they started a chemical free life.

During this period of adaptation, they realised they could find no detergents without hidden chemicals. Intending to use the washing greywater on their veggies, they really needed a solution that was completely free of toxins.

Enter soapberries. After a little while keeping them a secret, they decided the world needed to know about this life changing little nut. In 2013 they imported around 600kgs of soapberries, and That Red House as we know it was born.

    These are great!

I love the way these clean my clothes. No soap residue or powder stains even on my dark clothes. Would recommend these if you have sensitive skin.

    Soapberries Vs Supermarket Washing Powders

I thought I'd give the soapberries a go as I am really keen to try a natural alternative to supermarket washing powder and purchased a 250gm bag. A few weeks in and I am not disappointed. Clothes have been coming out clean so am very happy with the results. Once the 5 washes are done, the soapberries just get added to the compost. My kids have been complaining that their washing doesn't smell so I've added a few drops of a supermarket blended pure essential oil to homemade fabric softener and have had no complaints since. I've worked out for a family of 4, with about 8 - 9 washes a week, a kg of the berries should last 6 weeks. Unfortunately, not a cheap option to supermarket powders but am prepared to pay for something I believe in.
