Quick answer: Is a castor oil toothbrush worth it?
Yes, if you want to reduce petroleum-based plastic. Castor oil toothbrushes use nylon bristles made using oil from castor plant seeds rather than petroleum. Paired with a bamboo handle, they’re a practical option to consider. Although plant-based, the bristles are still plastic, can shed microplastics and aren’t home compostable.
A bamboo handle, plant-derived bristles and a simple paper box - there’s a lot to like about this little everyday swap. So, is it the right toothbrush for you? Below, we compare the materials, explain what to look for and help you choose.
What are castor bean toothbrush bristles?
They’re nylon bristles made using oil from castor plant seeds rather than petroleum. You’ll also see them called “castor oil bristles”. The oil is processed into a durable material for everyday brushing - so they’re plant-based, but still plastic.

Is a castor bean toothbrush right for you?
It could be a good fit if you:
- ✓ Want to reduce petroleum-based plastic in your everyday routine.
- ✓ Prefer a vegan toothbrush without animal-hair bristles.
- ✓ Like a manual toothbrush with soft bristles.
- ✓ Want a bamboo handle and plastic-free packaging.
- ✓ Are choosing brushes for the family, with adult and kids sizes available.
Probably not for you if you want completely plastic-free or microplastic-free bristles, prefer medium bristles or need a replacement head for an electric toothbrush. The Brush with Bamboo options we stock are soft-bristled manual brushes.
Why have we chosen Brush with Bamboo?
Not all “plant-based” bristles are the same. These are the details worth checking when you shop, and why we chose Brush with Bamboo for our shelves.
-
A clear plant-based percentage.
“Castor-based” can mean a blend. Brush with Bamboo’s bristles are USDA Certified 100% Biobased, meaning their carbon comes from renewable biological sources rather than fossil fuels. -
Certification behind the claim.
It’s reassuring to have more than a description on the box. The USDA certification verifies the bristles’ biobased content. It doesn’t certify that they’re plastic free or home compostable. -
A bamboo handle and simple packaging.
The handle uses FSC-certified bamboo, and the brush comes in a paper box without a plastic wrapper. Once the bristles and metal staples are removed, you can compost or reuse the handle. -
Clear information about where it’s made.
The bristles are made in the European Union, with the rest of the toothbrush made in China. You can see where each part comes from before deciding. -
A familiar everyday brush.
Both sizes have soft bristles and are vegan. Brush with Bamboo describes its brushes as offering a similar brushing experience and lifespan to conventional toothbrushes.
For us, the appeal is straightforward: plant-derived bristles, a bamboo handle and clear information about what you’re buying.
One for you, one for the little teeth in the house. Both options use the same castor bean oil bristle material.
Adult soft
Best for: adults looking for a soft-bristled manual toothbrush.

How do you care for it and dispose of it?
Give it a chance to dry. Rinse after brushing and store it upright in an open holder. Avoid leaving the bamboo handle sitting in water.
Keep an eye on the bristles. Replace your brush regularly and sooner if the bristles become worn or splayed.
When its brushing days are over:
- Use pliers to pull out the bristles and the small metal staples holding them in place.
- Put the bristles in general waste. They don’t belong in kerbside recycling or home compost. Check local disposal advice for the metal staples.
- Compost the bare bamboo handle at home, allowing time for it to break down, or give it a second life as a garden plant marker.
Tracey’s take - would I choose one?
A castor bean toothbrush isn’t a perfect answer, and I’d rather tell you that than sell you one on a promise it can’t keep. But for me, this is a swap worth making. It isn’t completely plastic free, but I like that the bristles come from a plant source and the handle can have another life in the garden.
I’d love to offer a completely plastic-free vegan toothbrush, but we haven’t yet found one we’re confident recommending for everyday brushing.
If reducing petroleum-based plastic is what you’re working towards, choosing plant-derived bristles and a bamboo handle makes sense. You still pick up your toothbrush and brush as usual - just with a different choice of materials.
Frequently asked questions
Are castor oil and castor bean toothbrushes the same thing?
The names usually refer to the same bristle source: oil from castor plant seeds. The wording alone won’t tell you how much is plant-derived, though, so check the brand’s material details and biobased percentage.
Does a bamboo handle mean the bristles are plant-based too?
No. The handle and bristles are separate materials. A bamboo toothbrush can still have conventional petroleum-based nylon or PBT bristles.
Where can you buy a castor bean toothbrush in Australia?
Biome stocks Brush with Bamboo adult soft and kids soft toothbrushes online.
Are castor oil toothbrush bristles plastic?
Yes. They're a plant-based nylon (polyamide) made from castor bean oil. The material is a plastic; the difference is that its carbon comes from a plant instead of petroleum.
Are castor bean bristles biodegradable or compostable?
Brush with Bamboo’s bristles aren’t suitable for home composting. Remove the bristles and metal staples before composting the bamboo handle. Put the bristles in general waste unless a specialist recycling service confirms it accepts them.
Do castor bean bristles shed microplastics?
They can, like every nylon bristle. Replacing your toothbrush regularly helps, because worn bristles are more likely to break down.
Is a castor bean toothbrush better than a bamboo toothbrush?
A castor bean toothbrush usually is a bamboo toothbrush, with plant-based bristles. Most bamboo toothbrushes use petroleum-based nylon bristles, so castor bean bristles take the fossil fuels out of the part most people don't realise is plastic.
Is there a completely plastic-free vegan toothbrush?
Not one we'd recommend yet. Plant fibre bristles such as sisal haven't matched nylon for everyday cleaning, so castor bean nylon is the closest practical option.
