Make Your Own Homemade Mascara
Ingredients
This recipe makes enough for 4 x mascara tubes or 3 x metal tins, making it very cost effective.- 2 teaspoons candelilla wax
- 1 teaspoon shea butter
- 1 teaspoon coconut oil
- 1 teaspoon castor oil
- 1 1/2 teaspoons palm oil free glycerine
- 2 teaspoons bentonite clay
- 2 teaspoons cornstarch
- 2 teaspoons activated charcoal
- 4 drops lavender essential oil (optional)
- 4 drops rosemary essential oil (optional)
Method
- Place a small glass mason jar or glass jug into a saucepan with about 5cm of water in it. Turn the heat to medium. Into the jar or jug add the candelilla wax, shea butter, coconut oil and castor oil. Stir until melted and remove from heat.
- Whilst hot, add the glycerine and stir with a small whisk until thoroughly combined.
- Mix in the bentonite clay, cornstarch and activated charcoal and whisk until fully dissolved (as we are using the clay and charcoal to bind and for colour only, a metal whisk is fine for this).
- Add essential oils, if using, and stir. If you find the recipe not liquid enough, add a little more castor oil.
- Whilst the mixture is quite hot and runny, using a pipette or the small plastic zip lock bag with a tiny corner cut off, squeeze the mascara into a mascara tube or pour into a small tin. Let it cool completely.
